Molas are a decorative folk art appliqué practiced by the natives of the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama. In this technique, several brightly colored fabrics are layered, then cut away and reverse appliquéd, traditionally by hand, to create a design usually depicting Folk Art themes. A small Mola is called a ‘Molita’ and is made for the souvenir trade. Not everyone enjoys handwork, so I have developed a fast, easy, non-fused machine technique as an option for those who prefer to use a sewing machine to create these intricate designs. In this workshop, you can learn either method by making a small sample that can be turned into a small wall hanging or incorporated into a future garment or bag project. There will be a variety of tribal and folk art motifs to choose from, and kits will be available for those who would prefer not to assemble their own fabrics and threads.
